MANDALORIAN HANDBOOK A Guide For New Vod In Service Of The Mandalorian People This document is intended to act as a series of guidelines for the Mandalorian Protectors in the current age. It acts as a code of conduct for every Mandalorian Protector, putting forth in plain language what actions are acceptable and honorable. The laws contained in this document find their roots in the Resol’nare and the Canons of Honor. While this document strives to cover as much ground as possible, it is by no means a complete guide to every scenario imaginable, and should be used as a reference alongside the individual soldier’s good judgment, and all actions should be directed toward an honorable outcome that befits the Mandalorians. Section 1: The Resol’nare Section 2: The Verd’goten Section 3: Rules of Engagement Section 4: Uniform Code Of Military Justice Section 5: Protector Signs and Terminology Section 6: Our History Section 7: Duties to the Mandalorian People Section 8: Known Enemies Section 9: Qualifications for Membership in the Protectors Section 10: Protector Pay and Ranks Section 11: OOC Behavior Section 12: Works Cited
SECTION 1 The Resol’nareThe six rules set down by the Taung in the first days of the Mandalorian culture, these rules must be followed if one is to consider themselves Mandalorian. Failure to adhere to these rules means that one is no longer Mandalorian, and should not be considered such. They are afforded none of the courtesies Mandalorians give to each other. They should be pitied. 1. Wear Mandalorian Armor: Armor should be comprised of a material which can withstand a reasonable amount of abuse and protects the wearer from harm more efficiently than thick cloth or simple hide. Armor should be in a style that is recognized as being Mandalorian in nature, but fitted to the individual needs of the Mandalorian soldier. Armor must consist of a minimum of a torso covering protecting the vital organs, some form of shoulder covering, and a helmet or mask. Under-armor space sealed suits with no exposed skin are highly encouraged but not required. - Armor should be clearly marked as Mandalorian when in a style not easily identified as Mandalorian. Any armor worn should be immediately recognizable from a reasonable distance as being Mandalorian. Final say on the specific requirements of armor style and marking traditions falls to the individual unit commander, but any outsider who is aware of what a Mandalorian is and possesses average intelligence should be able to determine that a soldier is Mandalorian without needing to ask solely based on the appearance of their armor.
- An adult Mandalorian who has earned their armor should wear said armor at all times that he is not within their personal home or the home of a trusted ally within the confines of a Mandalorian controlled area. All areas not directly controlled by Mandalorians, even those areas controlled by factions or persons considered to be allies to the Mandalorian people, are to be treated as hostile zones, where the majority of a Mandalorians armor should be worn at all times. The helmet, gloves, and boots are permitted to be removed in such allied areas, but should not be a distance from the Mandalorian that would require them to take a period of longer than one minute to don them. When in openly hostile territory, a Mandalorian should be able to be in full armor and helmet within ten seconds time, in order to counteract the threat of gas attacks, biological warfare, theft, and other such occurrences common to the battlefield.
- Mandalorian armor should be well maintained, having no hole in a single plate greater in circumference than the width of an adult’s thumb, no scratch or dent with a depth of more than a credit ingot’s width, no damage that compromises the integrity of an individual plate or component, and should be painted or coated well enough to determine the color the wearer intends the item to be, unless the intent is for bare metal. Polish and cleanliness of all plates and under-armor cloth portions as well as pouches and accessories is highly recommended for hygiene purposes and good order but is not required, especially in battlefield conditions where such actions could prove detrimental to tactical operations or distract from combat duties.
2. Speak the Mandalorian Language- An adult Mandalorian who had earned their armor should have at least a basic grasp of the language of the Mandalorians and be conversant in it. While numerous dialects exist in different parts of the galaxy, their core basis in the ancient language of the Taung is the same, and while an individual may be unfamiliar with certain words used by another, they should still know enough of the language to either fill in the gaps based on the rest of the conversation or else to ask the Mandalorian what they mean by that word.
- The Mandalorian language should be taught to children and new additions to the Mandalorians with equal weight as Galactic Basic or other dialects common to the area and required for survival. It should be used often in order to keep the Mandalorian conversant in it, and should be spoken about as often as Galactic Basic or other languages, dependant on the situation and the individual unit commander’s discretion. The Mandalorian language should be prized as a code language as well, as many outsiders do not understand more than a few basic words of it.
- The Mandalorian language should be used only sparingly to non-Mandalorians in order to instruct them on specific ideologies or the language itself unless the individual Mandalorian judges that the non-Mandalorian he is speaking to is a potential candidate to be adopted into the culture, and as such teaching that outsider would be beneficial to the Mandalorian culture as a whole.
- While the Mandalorian language is often modified by adding in words from other cultures and languages for concepts, technologies, ideologies, and materials that the original Mandalorian language has no simple word for, conversation should never be so filled with these words as to be entirely unrecognizable as the Mandalorian language. If a Mandalorian is speaking the language of their heritage, it should be immediately recognizable as such. In this same school of thought, broken-Mandalorian language should be avoided where possible by adult Mandalorians who have earned their armor.
- The Mandalorian language is a requirement of the ancient laws of old, but a Mandalorian is conversant in as many different languages and dialects as possible, prioritizing those which are most common in their area and those used by enemies for codes.
3. Defend Yourself and Your Clan- An adult Mandalorian who has earned their armor should be basically trained in self-defense and combat, to include unarmed combat, combat with melee weapons common to their trade or area of operations, and ranged combat with the weapon of their choice. Mandalorians should have a level of proficiency in combat such that when faced with an identically armed and armored opponent who is not himself a Mandalorian or possessing of the Force, the Mandalorian should end the combat in victory. A Mandalorian who considers himself a Soldier by trade should be of the proficiency that if faced with three opponents with identical arms and armor to himself who are not Mandalorian or in possession of the Force, the Mandalorian should end the combat in victory. Individual combat training standards for armed and unarmed combat for those who consider themselves to be Mandalorian Protectors or Mandalorian Supercommandos should be handled by the commander of the respective organization. Individual combat standards should be maintained by unit at the unit commander’s discretion.
- Mandalorians should maintain a minimum of one close combat weapon, such as a knife, sword, or martial arts form they exhibit a competence in, as well as a minimum of one weapon which can be used at a range of greater than five meters, such as a blaster, slugthrower, or thrown weapon. In the case of thrown weapons, the Mandalorian should maintain a number of weapons as such that if they were to throw the weapons at a continuous pace while advancing toward the target, they should have at least one projectile remaining when their target is dead or at such a time as they reach the resting point of their first thrown weapon. All weapons must be maintained in excellent working order, with inspections of weapons to ensure serviceability done on a regular basis at the unit commander’s discretion.
- No Mandalorian should be found to be in the possession of working weapons which have been deemed illegal or dishonorable by the Mand’alor, and Mandalorians should take care not to openly display weapons which are considered illegal by local law in order to avoid unnecessary conflict. Weapons of this nature should be treated on a case-by-case manner by unit commanders.
4. Raise Children as Mandalorians- An adult Mandalorian who has earned their armor should have enough knowledge of the Mandalorian culture, customs, traditions, and beliefs to train a child from birth to adulthood in being a competent Mandalorian.
- Any child belonging to a Mandalorian must be trained as a Mandalorian, regardless of status as adopted or blood relation, regardless of time of adoption or conception being before the individual became a Mandalorian, and regardless of any other circumstances. All children raised by Mandalorians must be trained as Mandalorians. All children conceived of Mandalorians should have every possible effort made by the Mandalorian parent to have the child raised as a Mandalorian. The parenting of children outside the Mandalorian culture and then abandonment to be raised in a non-Mandalorian culture should be seen as abhorrent behavior tantamount to both child abuse and leaving an ally behind enemy lines. If a Mandalorian intends to have intercourse with a non-Mandalorian, every possible measure must be made to ensure that either conception of a child will be impossible or that any child conceived will be raised as a Mandalorian.
- If a Mandalorian requests aid in raising a child in the Mandalorian culture, the request should not be turned down and all aid that is possible to be given should be rendered, even if the requested party must adopt the child in question or contact additional support. Mandalorian children should be considered a precious resource never to be wasted, and should be raised carefully, diligently, and above all else in a manner which will ensure a stable adult. Abuse or neglect should not be tolerated, and should be dealt with in the same manner as if a Mandalorian attacked their fellow without provocation or abandoned their ally behind enemy lines.
- Children adopted into the Mandalorian culture should only be brought in of their own free will where possible, and should never be stolen from their parents unless they prove neglectful or abusive, or abandon their child. Theft of children should be considered as reproachful as slavery.
- In extreme circumstances where a Mandalorian is barred by law from raising their children within the culture, that Mandalorian should seek to make reparations to the current guardian of the child in order to obtain their child and fulfil their duty to the culture. If such a thing becomes impossible, the Mandalorian should then provide financial aid to ensure the child is able to grow to adulthood and approach them as an adult with the option of becoming Mandalorian in order to fulfil the requirements of the heritage. If the progeny refuses, then the Mandalorian’s obligation is fulfilled.
- Outsider culture is not permitted to be taught to your children. Instances include, but are not limited to: Jedi, Sith, Nightsister, or Force wielding ideologies. The force is an outsider concept, and the belief in it is tantamount to the denial of the Manda, which makes one not a Mandalorian. To use the force is to use magicks well outside our understanding, and to potentially pollute the soul. Do not use it. Do not teach it.
- Outsiders can and should be converted into the mandalorian culture at any opportunity that does not break the laws of this document.
5. Contribute to the Clan’s Welfare- An adult Mandalorian who has earned their armor should be able to contribute no less than ten percent of their earnings to their individual combat unit in a manner which allows the unit to succeed. Mandalorians who are unable to provide an adequate amount of either monetary or physical contribution to their unit should be taken aside and taught a trade different from the one they are currently attempting to employ for monetary gain. No one member of a unit should provide to or consume more from the unit’s coffers than two of their peers. All Mandalorians should have a functional knowledge of a single trade before they have earned their armor, and should continually attempt to better themselves in this trade until such a time as they are unable to perform this trade. Individual trade proficiency and advancement requirements are under the discretion of the individual unit commander.
- Mandalorian trades should be honorable in nature, and should not take advantage of anyone, outsider or Mandalorian, to an undue amount. Mandalorians are forbidden from engaging in piracy, the raiding of unarmed or inadequately armed settlements or vehicles, slave trade or ownership, or make profit from the suffering of others. All forms of employment should be done with a written contract, should be considered legal by the Mand’alor, should be for a reasonable monetary or material gain, and should be expedient and efficient in nature. This includes the provision of goods produced or procured by the Mandalorian as well as services performed by the Mandalorian, to include those in the combat arms, such as Bounty Hunting and Mercenary work. No Mandalorian should ever take work which does not pay in goods, services, and/or monetary compensation equal to what would be considered to be the minimum wage of an area, within reason. It is recommended strongly but not required that all work done be heavily contracted so as to ensure proper payment is mandatory by the employer. Additional guidelines on which professions are considered dishonorable or unworthy are left to individual unit commanders’ discretion.
- Mandalorians providing goods for sale should provide a higher quality product than those that a non-Mandalorian competitor is able to provide. Mandalorians should, however, only provide the highest quality items to other Mandalorians, with lesser quality items reserved for non-Mandalorian consumers. Mandalorians providing services should provide a higher quality of service than non-Mandalorian competitors, striving to constantly better themselves at their chosen trade until the only close competitors are other Mandalorians.
6. Rally to the Call of Mand’alor- An adult Mandalorian who has earned their armor is required to heed the call of Mand’alor if he is able within reason. While Mand’alor does not have the ability to force any individual into open warfare with an enemy, all Mandalorians are required to support the war effort to the best of their ability in some manner or another or else appeal their unit commander to challenge Mand’alor’s regarding their current course of action. It is the individual unit commander’s duty to determine how their unit will support Mand’alor’s cause, and to punish those Mandalorians under their control who are derelict in their duties to the cause or who oppose the cause entirely. Opposition of Mand’alor’s cause without direct confrontation with Mand’alor first should be considered a treasonous act tantamount to denying the Mandalorian heritage and starting open rebellion, such as the Death Watch.
- If the Mand’alor’s cause would require a unit or individual undue strain in order to support due to distance from their area of operations, conflict of interest with current contracts, or other such circumstances, appeal must be made to Mand’alor for excusal from the cause, though it is the Mand’alor’s discretion if they will allow such a thing.
- If distance or seclusion causes the Mand’alor’s rally call to be missed, full mobilization should be made when the rally call is finally discovered and explanation should be given to the Mand’alor. The decision to punish individuals or units who did not receive the call to rally falls to Mand’alor alone, though if their judgment is deemed dishonorable or unjust an appeal or a challenge for the mask should be made.
SECTION 2 The Verd’goten One of the most important aspects of Mandalorian life is the making of new Mandalorians. This act is not a biological process; no being may claim Mandalorian armor as a birthright. Those that do are pretenders and should be forced into their heritage or stripped of their armor. The armor we wear is a symbol, it is a definition of who we are, and any who wear Mandalorian armor without first earning the right to do so should be chastised with great prejudice. Primary Training A Mandalorian who is born into a unit should begin their preliminary training as soon as they are able to walk and talk, learning the skills needed to become a warrior and the language of our heritage, but the true Verd’goten should not begin until a recruit is at least ten years of age or their race’s equivalent to late childhood, and should take no less than two years to complete. The earliest stages have the potential to be the easiest, but they should still be as brutal and harsh as combat. Sweat in training or bleed in war. An individual is referred to by the title ‘Recruit’ until they have completed this primary training. The primary training stage consists of two main goals. The first is the training of recruits into basic soldiers capable of executing simple maneuvers on command without thinking, who respect the orders of their superiors without question, who display the utmost loyalty to the Mandalorians as a whole, and who can continue to fight even when their body is broken. The second is weeding out and culling those incapable of performing those duties required of a basically trained soldier. A recruit who has spent more than two years attempting to complete the primary training portion of the Verd’goten process will be given the option to die in honorable combat with their instructor or peers or exile themselves forever from the Mandalorian culture. While each unit’s standards of training and methods will be different, the training should focus on five stages, and each should be in a different inclement or hazardous environment, should be as strenuous as possible without causing death to more than one percent of the training class, and the recruits should never know their location or planet: Basic Physical Training Unarmed Combat Armed Melee Combat Ranged Marksmanship Jetpack Combat
The Six Tasks The second phase of training should take longer than the first to perform, and should begin to shape the recruits into Mandalorians. The trainee who has graduated to this portion of training should be referred to as ‘Evaar'tal, or ‘new blood’.
Wear The Armor - The Evaar'tal should begin wearing armor at this point, and must display ability to wear it at all times without the armor impeding their movement. Armor should be worn from the moment the morning routine is finished until the day has ended, helmet and all, and should be worn during at least one physical training session per week until the Verd’goten is completed.
Speak The Language - The Evaar'tal is required to speak only Mando’a from this point until the end of their training, especially when speaking to Mandalorians. While they may struggle at first if they are an adopted trainee rather than born into the culture, they should be treated fairly and corrected often until their ability to speak the language is equal to that of any Mandalorian.
Defend Yourself - The Evaar'tal will undergo every mission the unit embarks on, and will be required to complete the missions without serious injury and while disabling or killing one of the targets they are given. Each unit will have its own standards to which this must be done and a number of missions required to be completed successfully in this manner before the task is considered complete.
Support your Clan - The Evaar'tal will be required to demonstrate knowledge of a trade of some sort, which they will be permitted to choose. Should this trade require them to become an apprentice, the Master they attach themselves to will have the ultimate say on when their skill is sufficient to earn credits for the unit, and when this task is considered to be complete. If they so choose, they may join the Mandalorian Protectors or Bounty Hunter’s Guild at this point, earning money for the unit in this way. When their basic training in this discipline is considered complete, so too will this task be.
Make Mandalorians - This task is about more than the physical act of procreation, it is a test of their knowledge of the culture and the methods to train a new Mandalorian. Each unit will have its own methods for testing and requirements for knowledge, but the task should be considered complete when the Evaar'tal is capable of running classes for new Recruits without making mistakes.
Rally to Mand’alor’s Call - The most difficult of the six, the Evaar'tal must perform some task for Mand’alor. In time of war, this means taking the front lines and fighting against the enemies of Mand’alor, incapacitating or killing a single foe unassisted. In times of peace, the Ge’verd must seek out the Mand’alor and perform a task he decrees. Mand’alor alone can decide if this task is completed. In times where no one wears the Mask, the Ge’verd should be subjected to a training re-creation of a historic battle that a Mand’alor took part in, complete with live fire and combat. The only person equipped with non-lethal weapons should be the Evaar'tal , and they will be required to incapacitate or kill one enemy and complete an objective in order to succeed as if this battle were real. If possible, the Evaar'tal should not know that the battle is a training re-creation until it is concluded.
The Crucible After the completion of the Six Tasks, the Ge’verd graduates to the title ‘Evaar’tal’, meaning ‘New Blood’. It is at this point they must be given a final task by their unit leader which proves them to be a true Mandalorian. They will be permitted to wear Mandalorian Armor during this task and are permitted to train in this armor for a period of no more than one month before attempting the task. The task can be anything the unit leader believes will challenge them sufficiently, and is usually centered around an area that they were lacking in during training. The task should be begun after a period of three days of non-stop physical activity, no sleep longer than one hour, and with only one small meal per day and only water to drink, testing the limits of their endurance.
SECTION 3 Rules of EngagementMandalorians are warriors first, and as such will spend time in combat in nearly every environment and potentially on every world. As such, a Mandalorian should keep in mind their rules of engagement as a guideline for keeping themselves out of trouble. These rules are only a guideline, however, and every scenario will dictate the Mandalorian’s actions differently. Nothing in these rules of engagement limits a Mandalorian’s right to take appropriate action to defend themself or their clan. - A Mandalorian has the right to use force to defend themselves against attack or threats of attack.
- The use of force against a Mandalorian or his allies should be met with equal or lesser force, as required to neutralize the threat, but never greater force.
- The threat of force should be met with the opportunity to surrender or cease in that threat before force is used to neutralize the threat.
- Force and threats of force should only be used to neutralize threats, not escalate them.
- Hostile fire may be returned promptly and effectively to stop a hostile act.
- While a Mandalorian should strive to never be the first to fire, they should strive to be the last.
- The elimination of hostiles never takes priority over the defense of the wounded or a guard post. If the enemy flees beyond a position where the Mandalorian can effectively defend their objective, they should be allowed to flee.
- Hostile fire should be met in equal force, though a number of Mandalorians using that same equal force against a lesser number of enemies is acceptable.
- When Mandalorians are attacked by unarmed hostile elements, Mandalorians should use the minimum force possible in proportion to the threat.
- When possible a Mandalorian should react to an unarmed threat without the use of weapons, though when outnumbered the use of nonlethal weapons is authorized.
- The use of lethal force against an unarmed target should be avoided at all costs. The use of lethal force against an unarmed target in a large group or mob will likely result in the escalation of the situation and is to be especially avoided.
- The use of ‘less than lethal’ force should be avoided unless necessary and should be used as prescribed by the unit commander.
- You may not seize the property of others to complete your mission.
- If a Mandalorian is insufficiently prepared to deal with a situation, he may not seize the property of another under any circumstances.
- A Mandalorian may use property which does not belong to him if express permission is given beforehand only, and never when permission is given under duress.
- A Mandalorian should always provide proper recompense for the use of any item borrowed for mission accomplishment.
- Detention of civilians is authorized for security reasons or in self-defense.
- Civilians should not be detained without valid reason at any time, especially if this can lead to an escalation of force.
- Civilians must be told why they are being detained if such becomes necessary.
- Civilians should be allowed to let someone know that they have been detained unless security reasons dictate otherwise, though to prevent coded messages being sent; a Mandalorian should be the one to speak with their contact.
- The individual Mandalorian does not have the right to declare war.
- Mandalorians should never perform any action that can be construed as an act of war without the permission of their unit commander
- Treat all persons with dignity and respect.
- Use the minimum force possible to carry out a mission.
- Always be prepared to act in self-defense.
OOC NOTE: This Part, in particular, is iffy, and based on the Uniform Code of Military Justice in use by the United States Military, as I am not a lawyer, it is a HUGE Work in progress, and will be adapted and changed as time goes on. The funny part that despite being IN the Army for six years, I never bothered once to read the UCMJ until it was adapted to a Mandalorian document. God I'm a nerd. Enjoy. Tl;DR don't be a doof. SECTION 5 Protector Signs and Terminology PROTECTOR SIGNALS Protector "Smile" Having grown up as soldiers, and working in armor, the Protectors kept their emotions to themselves, always controlling "bursts of emotion." The closest thing to an emotional symbol is the "Protector Smile," used in place of a smile. The Smile consists of a quick swipe across one's own faceplate or a teammates with two fingers. The former way was usually used in place of the latter.
Open COM The Protectors signal to one another to open private COM frequencies by the flick of a finger. It is a move performed only in non-combat situations, when the Protectors can pay attention to each other's movement. This way they can communicate with one another without any unintended people hearing the conversation.
Countdown Consists of blinking the green, then amber, then red acknowledgement lights.
"Attention!" The Protectors will click a COM channel twice to get the attention of their teammates if they need assistance.
"Trouble Ahead..." A Protector scout may signal that there is trouble ahead with a slight shake of the head from side to side.
"Stay Cool" A short lateral cut with the hand across the chest or mouth area signals to stay calm.
"Inspect Armor" By making a circle in the air with one to two fingers to turn around, a Protector signals that they want to visually inspect another Mandalorian’s armor. Even if the computer diagnostics report everything as fine, Protectors don't take chances with their armor or any other machinery and still visually inspect each other's armor.
"Come Forward" In combat, Protectors motion one another forward by flashing an index finger twice, sometimes two fingers are used for this gesture.
"Wait..." Protectors tell one another to wait by flashing an amber acknowledgment light twice on their HUDs.
"Fall back, Fall back!" Protectors signal one another to fall back immediately by winking three red acknowledgment lights on their HUDs.
"Friendly Approaching..."On the battlefield, verbal communication could risk giving away one's position. Therefore, Protectors inform allied positions that they are approaching by winking their acknowledgment lights green twice.
"Freeze" Slowly making a fist signals to tell a team to freeze.
"Unknown Ahead" Protectors on patrol who spot something ahead that is not immediately discernible as ally or enemy will signify it to their teammates by making a hand signal with a thumb pressing into the palm and the other fingers inwardly curled.

SECTION 6 Our History Though Mandalore had largely turned its back on its more war-like past by the Clone Wars, the Journeyman Protectors were one of the few traditions to continue, charged with protecting New Mandalorian leader, Dutchess Satine Kryze. However, Many saw Jango Fett as the rightful Mand’alor, and followed him in order to train clones on Kamino with the Cuy’val Dar. In the year 21BBY, the Protectors assisted in the investigation of Death Watch after the bombing of the peace park on Sundari, Mandalore. At the Third Battle of Mygeeto , the Protectors fought alongside the Grand Army of the Republic as Skull Squadron- participating in Most of the battles fought in the war. At some point after the Imperial occupation of the Protectors homeworld Mandalore, the Protectors left Mandalore and established a base on the third moon of theConcord Dawn System. Led by Fenn Rau, they forged an agreement with the Empire. This agreement last a long while before the rebel alliance were engaged above Concord Dawn. After capturing Fenn Rau and destroying their Fang fighters, Rau let the rebels use their hyperspace routes. In 2BBY, the Imperial Viceroy of Mandalore, Gar Saxon, discovered that the Protectors were allowing rebel ships to travel through the Concord Dawn system in order to avoid Imperial sector patrols. In an attempt to lure Fenn Rau back, Saxon and his Imperial super commandos attacked the Protectors' encampment on the third moon of Concord Dawn and wiped them out. When Rau traveled back to Concord Dawn with several members of the Rebel Alliance, as well as Sabine Wren, they discovered that the Protectors had been decimated. After escaping Saxon, Rau decided to join the rebellion. He, Sabine, and others would later forge the primary resistance movement on Mand’alor, and be a vital part of the Galactic Civil War.
SECTION 7 Duties To The Mandalorian People Mandalorian Protectors are the guardians of the Mandalorians, The guardians of the Mandalore sector, as well as the Mand’alor himself. They are the first, and last line of defense of the Mandalorians. They Adhere to one principle above all others, an ideal beyond that of any other creed they have, any other belief, any other oath: Hold. The. Line. The Mandalorian protectors task is simple: Fight for the Mandalorians, Fight for Mandalore, Fight for the Resol'nare. And do not stop fighting until the last breath leaves you. A Mandalorian protector will stand as a shield between the enemy and their people. They will die, not happily, but proudly if it comes to that. This is the ideal that every protector should strive towards. Any Surrender by a Mandalorian Protector is assuredly a lie to stall for time. Retreat to Mandalorian protectors mean to regroup and plan the next move, Fade back, and strike again.. Guerrilla tactics were the bread and butter of the original Mandalorian Protectors resistance against Imperial Occupation, and it is a tradition they've not neglected. As a Mandalorian Protector, you will be expected to not only be able to fight, but to survive alone if necessary in the most hostile of environments for weeks at a time. To maintain your own equipment, to fight either by yourself, or as part of a unit. You must be disciplined, professional, and above all else, prepared. Destroy the enemies of Mandalore with honor, ruthlessly, and efficiently. Tolerate no threats to our citizens.
SECTION 8 Known Enemies (THIS IS A WORK IN PROGRESS) Nobody is to be trusted but ourselves, and sometimes not even. The Death Watch attempted to remove our government, and replace it with a system of sloth and cowardice. If they oppose the government, the house system, or the Mand’alor, they are the enemy. If they harm our citizens, enslave them, or damage them in any way, then they are the enemy. Never feel sorry for doing your job, or disgrace yourself dishonorably to get on the level of our enemies. Be professional, even courteous, but be prepared with a plan to kill anyone you meet. Be vigilant. Be thorough. Be honorable. Be proficient.

HOW TO PLAY A SITH So, you want to be a Sith, do you? Wield a red lightsaber, blast someone with Force Lightning and generally be evil? We've got a lot of work to do. Anyway, decided I'd write a few things about the Sith, offer a different perspective to the one you'll find more commonly floating around, and therefore offer a way of RPing Sith that, well, makes sense (I hope). Please note that this isn't intended to be comprehensive (that would take me far too long to write, and I'd no doubt miss something or generate some debate!). Anyway, here we go:
THE PURPOSE OF THE SITH The origin of the Sith stems from a considerable divergence in belief about how the Force should be used: those who follow the 'Light' believe that their powers should only be used for peaceful ends, and thus to support the people of the Galaxy by offering passive guidance and protection, leaving them to choose their own rulers. Those who follow the 'Dark' believed that the gift of the Force was one that should be used more directly: those with the power to rule should do so, using that power to create a system of autocracy or oligarchy: government led by either one powerful individual, or by several such beings, using the Force to guide them. The Sith see this as natural: the strong rule, the weak serve, and thus is an ordered system maintained. Peace is enforced rather than hoped for, with any resistance to the rule of law being dealt with in the harshest possible fashion. This becomes possible because those in power have power, and thus are capable of squashing threats to the ordered society they seek to maintain. Piracy, disorder, rebellion: all of these are contrary to the natural order, and are eliminated accordingly, unless the 'Emperor' or 'Council' wishes it otherwise. Thus, to a Sith, the ultimate goal of their training and endeavour is to ascend to the pinnacle of power: to lead the Sith and, by extension, to rule the Galaxy, using their powers and insight to guide the Galaxy accordingly. A writer seeking to portray a Sith should therefore understand that they are the recipient of a unique gift, and that this gives them 'right to rule': they are, in some respects, ordained to rule, much in the same way that the ancient kings of Europe believed that the had 'divine authority' to rule, granted to them by God. Sith believe much the same: their power and ability to wield to the Force is a clear indication that they should wield that power in more ways than one, and most particularly over others who do not. I'll talk about more that later.
SITH TRAINING AND IDEOLOGY
This is the part that a lot of writers struggle with, particularly since they tend to go off the 'cooler' elements of being a Sith: wearing dark clothing, hiding in shadows, wielding red lightsabers, and so on. Those are, ultimately, affectations: you need not do any of them to be a Sith. You can if you wish to, but those things aren't essential. Here are a few key points: - Sith are avid practitioners of the concept of "survival of the fittest": to them, strength is not only the ability to wield the Force, but also the ability to adapt to adverse conditions. In their mind, those fit to rule must be capable of dealing with whatever is thrown at them. For this reason, suffering is a natural state to the Sith, and they perceive those who allow themselves to be crippled by it to be weak. Training is designed to weed out those incapable of coping with these adverse conditions: whether physical or psychological.
- Power comes only through sacrifice: the harsh nature of their training is designed to teach them that they will only gain strength from struggle, and this naturally demands sacrifice. Whether in the form of deprivation over time, physical or psychological injury, or simply being faced with obstacle after obstacle, a Sith learns from pain, from loss, from suffering. They do not hide from this: rather, they are required to face it, embrace it and make it a part of themselves. Only then can they gain strength from the experience.
- Force use among the Sith is derived primarily from their emotions: rather than letting go of the self, as Jedi are trained to do, Sith believe in using their emotions to 'force the Force', to draw upon it in a more visceral fashion. This invariably means that many of their powers are initially stronger than those of a Jedi, and are easier to draw upon, since emotion is never in short supply: thus, Sith are not necessarily expected to be trained with the same level of emotional discipline. That noted, this method has considerable drawbacks insofar as it is more physically taxing on the user, and those who wield the Force this way over long periods of time have been known to suffer ill health effects.
- With regards to emotional discipline, although Sith are indeed expected to be open with their emotions (viewing them as a positive, and often viewing the Jedi with disdain for restraining them), they are nonetheless expected to wield them carefully: a Sith flying into a murderous rage is unlikely to be capable of making effective decisions, and those actions can have very negative consequences. A Sith is expected to exercise patience and cunning, knowing when to use their emotions and when not to. This requires a high level of self-awareness, and much of a Sith's initial training is designed to make them understand themselves: what their triggers are, what provokes them, what their weaknesses are, and to make them recognise both their vulnerable sides and draw out their strengths.
- Sith are trained to disregard the choices of those weaker than themselves: they believe that every individual must seize their destiny with their own hands, rather than being handed it on a plate, and thus they see many as being effectively 'blind' to their own fates: sheep, in need of a shepherd. The purpose of a Sith, therefore, is to provide both governance and guidance to those they rule, but also to create an atmosphere that forces those beneath them to rise up and face their own purpose. It is for this reason that many Sith rulers have ultimately become oppressive: exercising their power cruelly to force people to rise up to the challenges presented, or be crushed beneath them.
- A Sith must naturally be as ruthless with those around them as they are with themselves: Sith are ultimately pragmatists, who see a goal and a purpose, and pursue this with dangerous efficiency. Those who stand in the way of this are merely obstacles, challenges that must be overcome and that will make the Sith stronger for doing so. Although Sith do not revere life as the Jedi do, they often see killing as wasteful (all beings are resources that can be called into service!), but they do not hesitate to kill if they must: they see this as culling the herd, removing the weak so that only the strong remain. This is oftentime warped into justification for murder on a larger scale, but this is often only among those who have misunderstood Sith philosophy, or have simply gone too far into madness to see reason.
- Although many believe that a Sith must be all pent-up with rage and hatred, this is only one form of Sith, and usually the least disciplined and capable of those among the Sith. Though their powers are invariably impressive, their abilities tend towards the more destructive, and they are far less capable than their brethren of using those skills which require greater emotional/mental discipline, or that require more thought and preparation. A Sith's choice of emotional focus can be anything: sorrow, joy, love, anger, jealousy, hatred, contempt, disdain, and so on. Negative emotions are easier to draw upon, because they tend to generate more natural emotional energy, but it is not impossible to wield Sith abilities using positive emotions: particularly because a Sith tends to be very self-aware and certain of the righteousness of their cause, even if they hold few illusions about the means they use to pursue it.
- Sith believe that they are enacting the Will of the Force by playing out the dichotomy between Light and Dark: they are servants of the Dark Side, and thus must always be opposed to those of the Light. Sith see themselves as being on the correct path because they are enacting the will of the Dark Side. Because the dichotomy exists within the Force, it is good and appropriate that it exists within society as well, and the Sith thus see themselves as servants of the Dark, as well as seeking to master it.
THE ROLE OF THE FORCE
The Force is a fairly complex entity among the Sith: there are some who see it as merely a tool, or a weapon, and others who perceive it in similar vein to the Jedi, as a companion and ally. The truth of Sith philosophy is something that recognises the Force as all four of these things: slave, ally, weapon, tool, and yet something more. Their focus on the 'Dark Side' espoused by a dualistic view of the Force derives primarily from their willingness to use power through emotion, and because the Dark tempts them to exploring greater depths of power. Ultimately, to a Sith, the Dark Side is not something to be feared, but to be challenged, harnessed and used: much as one would break in a horse in order to ride it, so must a Sith learn to use the Force, bending it to their will. That said, the notion of the Force as the slave of the Sith is also a misguided one: a Sith's power derives from the Force, and they cannot entirely disregard the 'Will of the Force', as the Jedi refer to it. For a Sith, they represent the opposing force to the Jedi: while the Jedi try to maintain peace by encouraging ennui, the Sith seek to create it through force, removing obstacles to an ordered galaxy ruled by the strongest. Their system demands chaos even as it seeks to establish order: strength is never something permanently maintained, and so leadership among the upper hierarchy of the Sith will shift constantly as individuals vie for supremacy. A Sith must come to rely on the Force, trusting it, but also understanding that it is as much an enemy as a friend: the corrupting power of the Dark Side is something that must be harnessed, but also fought against, since that same taint ultimately will push an individual's sanity to the very limits, and beyond, if the individual is not mentally disciplined or strong enough to resist it. As such, many Sith ultimately 'fall' even beyond the expectations of the Jedi: they turn their will for power into a lust for it, and destroy anything and everything that gets in their way. Any opposition or restraint becomes an enemy, and they ultimately slide into a level of psychosis that even the Sith understand to be excessive. Is it oftentimes these beings that are put to use by the Sith as weapons: a destructive force turned towards their enemies but that is ultimately to be sacrificed, with no part in the grand plan other than to die for it. Those who enact their destructive intent upon the Sith themselves will be slain out of hand. POWERS AND ABILITIES Because the Sith tap into the Dark Side of the Force, many of their powers are designed to be damaging or subversive: they lack the same moral restrictions as the Jedi, and do not see it as wrong to use the Force in a harmful way. Tapping into the Force through use of their emotions invariably creates some impressive displays: bolts of lightning or waves of telekinetic energy bursting forth when an individual is angry or enraged, for example. I daresay this is fairly familiar to all of us! That noted, these aren't the only powers available to a Sith: in addition to the neutral skills used by both Jedi and Sith, Sith are capable of wielding Sith Sorcery, arts that require a very disciplined frame of mind to achieve, as well as pursuing the arts of Sith Alchemy, a very dangerous branch of Force ability, but one with many useful byproducts. In lightsaber combat, a Sith will be expected to use their emotions productively, to fuel their attacks, but also wield strong mental discipline and subjugate their opponents - death, ultimately, is less of an achievement than forcing submission. is often used to great effect in their regard, either to unhinge an opponent or, among the very best practitioners, push their enemy to the edge and seek a conversion to the will of the Sith. They are also capable of practising more lethal forms of lightsaber combat than their Jedi counterparts, employing Juyo for those with better-than-average skill, though few have sufficient mental discipline to truly achieve this, and instead find themselves subverted powerfully by the Dark Side when using this approach, ultimately becoming violent in the extreme. Finally, they may also pursue skills from disciplines not of their own Order, in particular, the arts of the Dathomiri Nightsisters and those of the Sorcerers of Tund, among many others.
THE JEDI ORDER
The enmity established between the Sith and Jedi is a very long-standing one: since the Force Wars on Tython, the two groups have opposed each other, partially as a consequence of their choices with respects to the Force (one uses the Light, the other, the Dark), but also as a result of their political ideology: the Jedi believe their duty is to serve, the Sith believe their duty is to rule. This inherently draws the two into conflict, and places them as natural enemies. In dealing with a Jedi, the Sith will see one of two things: a misguided Force User who might be converted to the 'true path', or an obstacle to be overcome. You might seek to talk to a Jedi, make them see the error of their ways, or you might simply try to kill them. A more circumspect Sith might simply avoid them, or use trickery to lead them down the wrong path - this, however, tends to be difficult to do, since most writers will invariably 'know' that this is happening to them! It's worth noting that Jedi are often thought of as misguided by the Sith: slaves to a doctrine established to shackle their true powers and their own inner natures, suppressing their emotions and denying themselves full access to their powers and own destiny. A Sith who feels this strongly (particularly if they find commonality with the Jedi) will therefore focus their efforts on drawing the Jedi's attention to this, trying to shake their faith and push them towards a fall. Combat can be used to this end, too: should the Jedi suffer a defeat, this will serve to reinforce Sith superiority and be used effectively to nudge the Jedi into realizing that they have devoted themselves to a lie. Standard Sith training can thereafter commence, with particular emphasis on unlearning Jedi conditioning.
